Not everyone is blessed with boundless belief or optimism I know that statement might come as a shock, but thankfully we do have the occasional fluke incident that justifies a show of faith Monday morning this week was a case study in “if you build it people will turn up” Our glorious experiment had its second outing Surely the comparative success of week one wouldn’t continue? Divine intervention would bring down a plague upon our efforts, wouldn’t they? The answer after another outing would appear to be a resounding NO It does seem to be working out pretty well Thank You
A tough weekend for weather watchers threatened proceedings but there were still Thirty Two die hards in action ably corralled by Ref Jeff Betty with ball-boys Prout and Mullarkey once again braving the elements to support their Club
Three games produced eighteen goals, one game ended all square whilst the other two games ended with just a single goal separating the sides in each contest So the concern about uneven sides, runaway one-sided matches and the potential of dominant players running (or walking) riot simply didn’t happen
The sides selected were;
Sky - Little John, Ashy, Sheila, Tom Stretch, Mika and Eamon
Black - Chris K, Roger, Les H, Triallist and Lord Rainford
Purple - Paul F, Snakehips, Amazon, Steve J and Phil the Power
Pink - Enoch, Chopper, Wickie, Charlie and Citeh Geoff
Orange - Les Meldrew, Donal, McSpeed, Kirsty, Glen and Eileen
Yellow - Andy Man, Robin, Margaret, Steve Honeyman, Tony W and Brian
Pitch A (nearest the grandstand) was an epic that featured Eamon displaying his trickery for er….both teams Not content with firing 2 goals for Black he decided to support his opponents by claiming a hat trick for Sky At the conclusion Black had lost by the odd goal in eleven! Chris Kelsall and our plucky Triallist with two were also on target for Black but Tom Stretch, Sheila and Lord Rainford all found the net to ensure Sky prevailed 6 - 5 As always I earnestly request that the messenger is shot rather than the writer
I can’t follow just who played for whom and as a consequence the scorers of the goals reported No matter it was a close contest - probably
The Oranges and Lemons Citrus Derby was even closer with both sides struggling for the upper hand to squeeze their opponent’s pips After their 55minutes plus, the sides could not be separated with Orange through McSpeed and Donal matched by goals by Brian and Tony W for Yellow Fine game with neither side deserving to lose (or indeed win)
Pink and Purple was delayed slightly to accommodate an attempt at preemptive balance adjustment that was summarily denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport Despite tendering 115 reasons that the sides weren’t fair, the big money KCs pleas were rejected The ruling that they were ‘Miserable Pleaders’ was passed down and play got underway
After a pulsating game Purple prevailed pipping the posturing Pink by the odd goal in three Purple scorers were Steve Jones and Dave Amazon Prime with Andy Enoch Powell grabbing the early lead for Pink before Purple hit back to win 2-1
Post match congratulations were dispensed before a traditional Cake frenzy illuminated proceedings in the Slipper Salon Not content to limit his mighty contribution to his ball boy skills Phil the Cat again showed his versatility with another confection of delight Birthday Celebrations began 24 hours early for John Wickie Whittaker who marked his 70th Celebration with further supplies of quality cake A good time was had by all
Happy Birthday on Tuesday 26th November to John, who has gone to extraordinary lengths (Cambodia) to escape the big day Have a great day Our resident Cockney Rebel celebrated his birthday as is now usual in the sunny climes of Tenerife Phil the Moss is another birthday boy with Saturday 30th celebrations Anyone who has been overlooked in the Birthday Department can feel neglected in this Blog We will try harder next time A cake on Monday mornings is a great aide memoire
Midweek mega matches, a capacity crowd swaying gently in the sub-zero conditions Whilst not 15 miles away a capacity crowd sways gently in anticipation of another memorable Sutton SoccerDome night As distractions go SHWFC helpfully obliged A smaller number of devotees than usual perhaps but enough for the cosy carpet slipper boys (the Innards) and the Outward Bounders to ply their trade for another jolly Wednesday outing
The throng of members with last minute hair appointments and library books to return meant session numbers were comfy and cosy Ref Jeff Betty resisted the temptation to split himself in half to cover both games Instead we had an ‘honour’ referee selected to look after the Innards
The Innards ensemble included;
Simon, Joe the Ghost, Spiro, Andy Man, Midweek Michelle, Phil the Power, Les Hewitt, Citeh Geoff, Steve Carine and Grav
The hour was spent taking turns in re-arranging deck chairs set-out around the Sports Hall No goals were scored despite valiant efforts from the usual suspects, no cards were self-dished out nor were any details provided for a would be Blogarista At the end of the session all had a jolly good hand shake with their opponents and team mates alike (whoever they might be) No photographs were available either- so not much to write home about - so we didn’t!
The Outward Bounders formed in two powerful looking combos as follows;
Yellow - Joe, Martin Mc, Mark Dav, Peter T, Eamon and Haggis
White - Deano, Graham, Little John, Eileen, Chris 4G and Ian Hilton
White raced into the ascendancy thanks a Deano hat trick and solitary Ian strike Mark Dav found the net on his return from injury and Rome Green fell into the trap of leaving too many gaps in defence that White were only to happy to exploit At half time there was a mini reshuffle of the sides with Haggis and Ian switching The score at that point 5-3 in favour of White meant the Green rearguard was steelier for the rest of the game The match ended 8-6 to Green in a reversal of the first half showing
The scorers were
White - Deano 3, Ian 2 and Eileen
Green - Eamon 3, Mark 2, Roy, Peter T, Ian (in 1st half)
In celebration of a momentous week we are happy to share photos of Tom Derby (including natty bucket and spade) and Mark Dav (not taken at the Totally Wicked Stadium
Same again next week? Yes please!
